At the Helm­holtz Insti­tute Freiberg for Resource Tech­no­logy (HIF), innov­at­ive tech­no­lo­gies for the cir­cu­lar eco­nomy are developed to provide and use min­eral and metal-bear­ing raw mater­i­als more effi­ciently and to recycle them in an envir­on­ment­ally friendly way.

As part of the Insti­tute, the Depart­ment of Pro­cess Metal­lurgy invites applic­a­tions as

PhD stu­dent (f/m/d) in Pro­cess Metal­lurgy

The pos­i­tion will be avail­able from 1 Feb­ru­ary 2023 sub­ject to pro­ject fund­ing approval. The employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited to three years.

Working field:

  • Devel­op­ment of a pro­cess on the hol­istic util­iz­a­tion of slags, with a focus on metal recov­ery through pyro­me­tal­lur­gical tech­niques
  • Lit­er­at­ure research on metal­lur­gical pro­cesses
  • Per­form­ing metal­lur­gical exper­i­ments on labor­at­ory and pilot scale; com­mis­sion­ing, super­vi­sion and optim­iz­a­tion of equip­ment and pilot plants
  • Will­ing­ness to closely cooper­ate with other research­ers in pro­ject
  • Present­a­tion of rel­ev­ant res­ults at con­fer­ences and pro­ject meet­ings
  • Pub­lic­a­tion of res­ults in high qual­ity journ­als as part of the devel­op­ment of a PhD thesis


  • Gradu­ated degree (dip­loma, mas­ter) in Metal­lurgy, Pro­cess Engin­eer­ing, Mater­i­als Sci­ence, Engin­eer­ing, Chem­ical Engin­eer­ing or a com­par­able degree pro­gram
  • Interest in engin­eer­ing and solv­ing com­plex prob­lems, exper­i­ence in oper­at­ing pyro­me­tal­lur­gical equip­ment (lab, pilot-scale) is advant­age­ous
  • Know­ledge of zinc metal­lurgy is a plus
  • Con­scien­tious, well-struc­tured, cre­at­ive, inde­pend­ent and team-ori­ented way of work­ing
  • Good lan­guage skills in Ger­man, Eng­lish (spoken and writ­ten) is advant­age­ous
  • Struc­tured doc­u­ment­a­tion of exper­i­ments and res­ults, reports and pub­lic­a­tions
