The Cen­ter for Advanced Sys­tems Under­stand­ing (CASUS) is a Ger­man-Pol­ish research cen­ter for data-intens­ive digital sys­tems research. We com­bine innov­at­ive meth­ods from math­em­at­ics, the­or­et­ical sys­tems research, sim­u­la­tions, data sci­ence, and com­puter sci­ence to provide solu­tions for a range of dis­cip­lines – mater­i­als sci­ence under ambi­ent and extreme con­di­tions, earth sys­tem research, sys­tems bio­logy, and autonom­ous vehicles.

CASUS was jointly foun­ded in August 2019 by the Helm­holtz-Zen­trum Dresden-Rossen­dorf, the Helm­holtz Centre for Envir­on­mental Research, the Max Planck Insti­tute of Molecu­lar Cell Bio­logy and Genet­ics, the Tech­nical Uni­versity of Dresden and the Uni­versity of Wro­claw. CASUS is loc­ated in the heart of Görlitz at the bor­der between Ger­many and Poland. The CASUS start-up phase is hos­ted by the Helm­holtz-Zen­trum Dresden-Rossen­dorf and is fin­anced by the Fed­eral Min­istry of Edu­ca­tion and Research and the Saxon State Min­istry of Sci­ence and Art.

The CASUS invites applic­a­tions as

Head (f/m/d) of the CASUS Pro­fes­sional Sup­port Team.

The pos­i­tion will be avail­able as soon as pos­sible. The employ­ment con­tract is lim­ited to two years.

The Scope of Your Job:

CASUS is seek­ing an out­stand­ing can­did­ate (f/m/d) for head­ing the CASUS Pro­fes­sional Sup­port team, a high-level sup­port team of sci­entific research soft­ware engin­eers (f/m/d). The CASUS Pro­fes­sional Sup­port team works together with sci­ent­ists (f/m/d) from the CASUS Research Teams, data sci­ent­ists (f/m/d), com­puter sci­ent­ists (f/m/d), soft­ware engin­eers (f/m/d) and external col­lab­or­at­ors (f/m/d) on the co-devel­op­ment, main­ten­ance and trans­fer of sci­entific research soft­ware.

The can­did­ate (f/m/d) will be respons­ible for stra­tegic­ally build­ing up the CASUS Pro­fes­sional Sup­port team in con­sulta­tion with the CASUS Dir­ect­or­ate the CASUS Research Team Lead­ers (f/m/d) and will aso be respons­ible for lead­ing the team, coordin­at­ing its daily work and stra­tegic­ally alloc­at­ing the team’s resources accord­ing to the needs of the CASUS sci­entific pro­gram. The can­did­ate (f/m/d) is expec­ted to work together with the CASUS Research Team Lead­ers (f/m/d) and CASUS Dir­ect­or­ate (f/m/d) in an open and col­lab­or­at­ive way, with a focus on sup­port­ing CASUS research soft­ware co-devel­op­ment together with CASUS sci­ent­ists (f/m/d), as well as main­ten­ance, reuse, trans­fer and applic­a­tion sup­port of CASUS research soft­ware solu­tions.

Working field:

  • Built-up and lead the CASUS Pro­fes­sional Sup­port Team of research soft­ware engin­eers (f/m/d)
  • Alloc­ate the teams resources accord­ing to the needs of the CASUS sci­entific pro­gram in con­sulta­tion with the CASUS Research Team Lead­ers (f/m/d) and CASUS Dir­ect­or­ate (f/m/d)
  • Motiv­ate and guide the CASUS Pro­fes­sional Sup­port team to work with CASUS sci­ent­ists (f/m/d) on co-devel­op­ment of sci­entific research soft­ware in an open, respect­ful and sup­port­ive way
  • Set up and execute a strategy of apply­ing, main­tain­ing, reusing and trans­fer­ring CASUS research soft­ware solu­tions
  • Develop and apply instru­ments for teach­ing, know­ledge trans­fer and sup­port for research soft­ware and soft­ware engin­eer­ing


  • Excel­lent PhD degree and sci­entific track record in Com­puter Sci­ence, Com­pu­ta­tional Phys­ics or an equi­val­ent field of sci­ence
  • At least three years of work exper­i­ence after the PhD, prefer­ably within a sci­entific con­text
  • Proven track record of lead­ing a team
  • At least three years exper­i­ence in research soft­ware engin­eer­ing
  • Excel­lent com­mu­nic­a­tion skills in Eng­lish and in a pro­fes­sional con­text (present­a­tion of res­ults at meet­ings, col­lo­quial dis­cus­sions, writ­ing of manuscripts)
  • Exper­i­ence in devel­op­ing and apply­ing research soft­ware in an inter­dis­cip­lin­ary envir­on­ment
  • Exper­i­ence in sup­port­ing and teach­ing pro­fes­sional research soft­ware use and devel­op­ment
  • Prefer­ably exper­i­ence in at least one or more of the fol­low­ing areas: High per­form­ance com­put­ing and par­al­lel pro­gram­ming; Machine learn­ing and arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence; Sci­entific com­put­ing and numer­ical tech­niques; Visu­al­iz­a­tion, visual and data ana­lyt­ics; Human-machine inter­faces; Cloud com­put­ing; Edge com­put­ing; Quantum com­put­ing; Con­tinu­ous devel­op­ment, integ­ra­tion and deploy­ment; Pro­fes­sional soft­ware devel­op­ment; Soft­ware test­ing; Per­form­ance ana­lysis and tun­ing; Open source devel­op­ment
  • Strong motiv­a­tion to work in a col­lab­or­at­ive envir­on­ment
