Student Assistants (m/f/x) (9hrs/week)

At the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Geosciences, the Chair of Geoinformatics, subject to the availability of resources, is seeking to employ two students as

Student Assistants (m/f/x) (9hrs/week)

starting as soon as possible. The position is limited until August 31, 2025 (end of project). The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG) in conjuction with the guidelines of the TdL für student assistants as of February 28, 2024.
The project KOMET aims to support the professionalisation of the metadata processes of independent, scholar-led OA journals and thus increase their visibility in the scientific system and their importance as a publication venue. As part of the TU Dresden team, we are developing software that allows geographical metadata on scientific articles to be recorded, curated and published in open databases, e.g., Wikidata. We are also developing a search platform for scientific publications based on geospatial data, i.e. locations and time periods that are considered in a publication, with connections to journals and preprint servers based on Open Journal Systems and Janeway. We are looking for committed and interested young developers who would like to join an experienced team of software developers and scientists to collaboratively develop and enhance the next generation of systems for scientific work and expand their knowledge in the field of scientific software development.

Working field:

academic support, esp. software development in the research project KOMET.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled student at a university
  • Good written and spoken English skills
  • Interest in scientific software development
  • Independent way of working
  • In the best case, the following technical skills are (partially) provided:
    o Experience in agile software development with Python or another object-oriented programming language (e.g., Java, R, PHP)
    o Experience in geographic information systems (GIS) and the processing of geodata
    o Experience with GitHub/GitLab
    o Experience with Linux and Docker
