Zebrafish, in contrast to humans, can replace neurons after spinal injury from endogenous stem cells (Becker and Becker, Development 2022). We have begun to unravel a signalling pathway by which immune cells instruct spinal stem cells to generate new neurons after injury (Cavone et al., Dev Cell 2021). Using single cell genomics and epigenomics, the postdoc will develop a mechanistic understanding of this unique phenomenon and directly test important factors in vivo using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. This project will elucidate the principles of stem cell re-programming for neurogenesis and thus identify new targets for therapeutic approaches in non-regenerating species.
