Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf e.V.

Through cutting-edge research in the fields of ENERGY, HEALTH and MATTER, Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) solves some of the pressing societal and industrial challenges of our time. Join our 1.500 employees from more than 70 nations at one of our six research sites!

The Institute for Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research is dedicated to the study of materials and their nanostructures that can be considered for future applications in information technology and are based on electrical, magnetic or optical functionalities.

The Department of Ion Beam Center is looking for a

PhD Student (f/m/d) spatially resolved single or few ion implantation for quantum technology.

Working field:

Your task will be the spatially resolved placement of few or single ions into materials relevant for quantum technology. You will make use of our new unique triple focussed charged particle beam setup to place ions with high spatial resolution into materials relevant for quantum technology. With this device you will be able to accurately place a large variety of ions with a resolution in the few ten nanometer regime. This includes the application of a new detector which is optimized for the detection of single ion implantation events. The implanted atoms and the related defects will be investigated by cathodoluminescence, scanning probe techniques (available in the group) and other methods in collaboration with external and inhouse research groups. Your research on the optimization of ion implantation for the creation of spatially controlled single photon emitters will help to better understand the fundamental building blocks for quantum communication.
  • Explore and understand the conditions required for the successful realization of single or few atom implants
  • Development of a detector suitable for the detection of single ion implantation events
  • Perform single ion implantation to create single photon emitters for quantum technology and asses their properties with our partners
  • Apply cathodoluminescence and scanning probe techniques for the characterization of the implants, the formed defects and the collateral damage
  • Investigate the implanted atoms and the created defects with respect to their optical properties
  • Publishing the results in appropriate journals

Requirements:

  • A completed master in Experimental Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Interest in quantum technology and advanced focused ion beams
  • Experience in conducting experimental work and the ability to build delicate devices
  • Experience in the application of charged particle beams, scanning probe techniques or optical characterization (photoluminescence, . . . ) would be beneficial
  • Programming knowledge for example in C++, Python, Matlab, R, Java, LabView
  • Readiness to work with an international team
  • Willingness to travel

What we offer:

  • A vibrant research community in an open, diverse and international work environment
  • Scientific excellence and extensive professional networking opportunities // The space for personal responsibility, design and own ideas
  • A structured PhD program with a comprehensive range of continuing education and networking opportunities - more information about the PhD program at the HZDR can be found here
  • Salary and social benefits in accordance with the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD-Bund) including 30 days of paid holiday leave, company pension scheme (VBL)
  • We support a good work-life balance with the possibility of part-time employment, mobile working and flexible working hours
  • Numerous company health management offerings
  • Employee discounts with well-known providers via the platform Corporate Benefits
  • An employer subsidy for the "Deutschland-Ticket Jobticket"
