PhD position (m/f/d) 052-24-1002

The Institute for Solid State Physics of the IFW Dresden offers a PhD position (m/f/d) on the following topic: Investigation of thermal transport in multiferroics.

Working field:

In magnetoelectric (ME) compounds, the spin-orbit and spinlattice interactions create a strong coupling between the electric and magnetic properties. This interaction has enabled the development of electric-field-driven control over magnetic states, which has prominent importance in future electronic and spintronic applications. However, there is only limited research on the heat transport in multiferroics. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the giant thermal Hall effect in the magnetoelectric Fe2Mo3O8 and uncovering its underlying microscopic mechanisms. Motivated by this exciting new development in the study of multiferroics, we plan to extend the research of transport effects to other multiferroic compounds. Moreover, we anticipate the discovery of new, more exotic thermal transport phenomena in multiferroics, similar to the recently found thermal diode effect.
In pursuit of this research, we are inviting one PhD student (m/f/d) to join our research group. The suc-cessful candidate (m/f/d) will receive comprehensive training in thermal transport, magnetic, and mag-netoelectric measurement techniques in an exceptionally well-equipped research environment. The candidate's main responsibilities involve sample preparation for the experiments as well as the setup and management of the measurements. The candidate (m/f/d) will also participate in the ongoing experimental developments and take an active role in the daily life of the laboratory. The candidate (m/f/d) will also share their findings through publications in high-impact scientific journals and presentations at rele-vant conferences. The candidate’s work will bring an important contribution to the field of multiferroic research.

Requirements:

We welcome applications from individuals (m/f/d) with an MSc degree (or those expecting to graduate before the appointment date) in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or related fields. Prior experience with multiferroics or transport measurements is a valuable asset. We seek candidates with a strong passion for cutting-edge research, interest in experimental development, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team.

What we offer:

The selected candidate (m/f/d) will receive a salary following TV-L rules (E13, 65%). The initial appoint-ment is for one year, with the possibility of an extension for an additional two years based on perfor-mance. The anticipated start date is no later than January 1, 2025, with the flexibility to start one month earlier or up to 2 months later.

How to apply:

In line with our commitment to diversity, we encourage qualified persons of all genders to apply, as we aim to increase representation in the field of science. Additionally, disabled applicants (m/f/d) will receive preferential consideration if they meet the requisite qualifications. Promising candidates will be invited for an interview.
Please send your application with informative documents (letter of motivation, CV, relevant transcripts, training certificates, and contact details for at least two professional references) exclusively in electronic form and in a PDF file (other formats will not be considered), citing the reference number 052-24-1002, no later than 30.10.2024 to
